Pronunciation Exercise: Phonemic Awareness

  1. INITIAL POSITION

    1. Teacher says the word (example: farm)

    2. Student is asked to state the initial consonant (example: "f")

    3. Teacher says the word without the initial consonant and tells student to add the initial consonant to this word (example "arm - add an "f").

    4. Students says the word with the initial consonant (example: "farm").

  2. FINAL POSITION

    1. Teacher says the word

    2. Student echoes

    3. Student says word without the final consonant sound

    4. Student says the words and adds the final consonant sound

    Example:

    Teacher says

    Student replies

    Say great

    Say great without the /t/

    Add /t/ to the end

  3. FINAL OR MEDIAL POSITION

  4. Teacher tells the student a sound to identify where they hear a sound and then to repeat the word emphasizing that sound. Example:
    Teacher: Where do you here the /m/ in summer?
    Student: In the middle. Summer.

  5. BLENDING OF THE WHOLE WORD
    Students blend phonemes to produce a whole word. Teacher says word phonemes. Students repeat and then says how many sounds they hear, then they blend them into a word. Example:
    Teacher: pay
    Student: pay. "p" "ay", pay.
